Highlights
- Destiny 2's latest update nerfs The Mountaintop grenade launcher's rocket jump ability, frustrating many players.
- Update 8.0.5 brings adjustments to PvE/PvP, weekly challenges, and crucible map weighting.
- Players hope Bungie will reverse The Mountaintop nerf in the future, amid other weapon sandbox changes.
Version 8.0.5 of Destiny 2 marks the beginning of this year's Solstice event while also carrying a lengthy list of bug fixes and gameplay adjustments, with the patch notes confirming a nerf to The Mountaintop grenade launcher's ability to accommodate grenade jumping. This one-of-a-kind weapon in Destiny 2 is the only grenade launcher that allows players to effectively rocket jump, and has recently enjoyed more widespread use among players thanks to the weapon's resurgence with the Into the Light update.
The Mountaintop is far from the only weapon to see changes with Destiny 2's latest update, though outright nerfs seem to be relatively few this time around. Update 8.0.5 sees a lot of adjustments to both PvE and PvP environments, with Crucible map weighting getting mixed up a little, the Dual Destiny exotic mission receiving a weekly challenge that grants players an additional exotic class item, and Zavala now offering the opportunity for players to attune to specific BRAVE weapons, which boosts the drop rate of attuned weapons by 60% in Onslaught.

Destiny 2's latest patch makes plenty of adjustments throughout lots of different areas, including this unfortunate change to The Mountaintop. Specifically, the update introduces a limit to player acceleration when grenade jumping with The Mountaintop, impacting players' ability to boost themselves up to high-up spots and cover long distances quickly. While many enthusiasts of the weapon are unsurprisingly pretty frustrated by this change, many players simply wonder why this acceleration limit was introduced. There isn't really a clear answer, but it was likely done to prevent physics interactions that cause problems for the game's engine.
Players have demonstrated the effects of "stacking" Mountaintop grenades to achieve massive velocities in Destiny 2 in the past, often with hilarious results. It wouldn't be outrageous to think that these measures were put in place to prevent physics-related engine bugs from occurring in-game, especially considering how common such issues are in Destiny 2. That said, some players fear that Bungie intends to reduce the effectiveness of many of the game's popular movement techniques going forward - though it doesn't seem like movement in Destiny 2 is much of a problem in the developers' eyes, especially considering they delivered the Strand subclass just a year and a half ago.
Still, players can only hope that Bungie goes back on this change to The Mountaintop in a future patch, or at least offers some transparency as to why the adjustment was made. Mountaintop aside, Destiny 2's latest update has shaken up the weapon sandbox a little, with some weapon types having been rebalanced to better fit into PvE activities.
